Independent film festival fans on Fort Myers Beach this weekend cast their votes for "Crackers," as the People's Choice Award winner among the entries in the 6th Annual Fort Myers Beach Film Festival. "Crackers" is a comedy starring Vincent D'Onofrio, Brenda Vaccaro, Dan Hedeya, Sal Richards, Anthony Laciura, Vincent Mora, and BethAnn Bonner. Written by Timothy Reinhardt and directed and produced by Greg Principato, who accepted the award at the festival's closing ceremonies, "Crackers" also shared an award for Best Short Film. The other winning short film is "Easy Street," directed by Russell Greene and starring Andrew Blair, who won the film festival's Best Actor Award for most promising up and coming actors.

Best Feature Award goes to "The Descending," written and directed by Kyle Thompson. Producer Chad Gurdgiel and actor Chris Harbur were on hand at the festival to accept the award. Best Documentary is "Virtual JFK," directed by Koji Masutani. The Fort Myers Beach Film Festival also screened student films and films that were locally written and produced. Winners in those categories include "White Out," written, produced, and acted by Fort Myers filmmaker Madison Absher and "Broken Silence" directed by student filmmaker Gerrad Wilson.
The Fort Myers Beach Film Festival honored celebrity guest Kimberly McCullough, actress and director, with the Rising Star Award.

Dancing her way to a professional career as a youngster on such shows as "Fame," "Solid Gold," and "The People's Choice Awards," Kimberly McCullough made her feature film debut in the 1984 break-dancing musical "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo."  She worked as a television actress, appearing in "Among Friends," "The Shield," and "Joan of Arcadia."

From musical theater to television sitcoms to her well-known role as Dr. Robin Scorpio on "General Hospital," she has proven to be one talented woman. On Fort Myers Beach this weekend, she debuted her first film and provided a workshop about her experience writing and directing "Nice Guys Finish Last."

McCullough learned Friday that she was named to the Disney/ABC Directing Fellowship for 2012 to 2014. For the next two years, she will have the opportunity to direct episodes on ABC television series and work with veteran Disney/ABC Television Group network and studio executives
